Inspiration

"There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life. But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint. So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be."

-George Sheehan

(The late George Sheehan I just found out about when I Google'd "running quotes" and can't wait to find out more about him. If you're ever looking for a source of inspiration to continue running, he's your go-to guy!)

Kimberly: Week one part 2

"push your mind, stretch your body"

Since I had a gnarly case of bronchitis for the last few weeks my training fell by the wayside. I was pretty bummed about this - Lisa has been doing so great with her training and I wanted to be out there doing it right along with her - okay, maybe not in person but definitely in spirit!!

Towards the end of last week I really started to feel like my old self and decided I would try to get in a condensed week one of the training so that today I could start fresh with week two! Friday, Saturday and Sunday I went out and did my walk/runs and honestly, I felt great! However, I won't be doing anymore back to back runs in the future. I think I'll be alternating between runs and yoga and give myself Sundays off to recoup and relax. I should fit in some strength training! I need to do a bit of research on what I should be aiming to do exactly and HOW I should be doing it.

Today is yoga and I'm looking forward to my two and three year old joining me! They're natural yogi's ;) And tomorrow David (my oldest son) will be joining me in my run! And here I was wishing I had a puppy to jog with too! ;) Kids make a SUPERB substitute!!

Lisa: Overcoming hurdles

>> Sunday, March 28, 2010

For my third week of the Couch-to-5k training I was faced with my first real hurdle: family in town visiting!  This is not to say that my mama-in-law and family friend's visit wasn't really great and exciting (because it was!!) but the hurdle that I had to overcome was the distraction that their visit brought.
I was off of work on Friday (Cesar Chavez Day) so was able to spend the entire day sight-seeing with them.  Fridays are generally my third day of training for the week so my initial plan was to wake up early and go for a run before we set out for the day.  Unfortunately, I am not a morning runner.  Mid-morning?  Yes.  First thing in the morning?  No.  My body just isn't awake enough to get out and hit the pavement.  So without running in the morning I decided to run that evening.  However, we didn't get back into the city until late so that didn't work out either.
On Saturday on the way home from the day spent in Golden Gate Park, I was offered some Sun Chips.  All I wanted to do was eat those darn chips and say "forget it" to my third day of my third week of training.  What's one day missed in the scheme of things? I thought.  It took every ounce of my being to refuse the offer and determine to run that evening.  So we got home around 6pm and I immediately strapped on my running shoes, grabbed Lola's leash and ran out the door before I could talk myself out of it!  And I am so happy I did.  :)

Week three: complete!
(I still don't have a darn stopwatch so couldn't follow the C25k's exact plan for the third week.  Instead, I upped the time to 4 minutes run/1 minute walk this week and luckily was able to do it without any problems)

Lisa: Week two, a success!

>> Saturday, March 20, 2010

The sun has been shining oh-so-brightly up here in San Francisco and I've been enjoying every minute of it!  For my second week of training, I've been following this basic plan on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays:

  • 10 minute walk warm-up
  • Run 3 minutes, Walk 1 minute for 20 minutes
  • 10 minute walk cool-down
So far Lola has accompanied me on every run and she's definitely getting better with time!  After the first round of running/walking she realizes that we aren't on a leisurely stroll so won't stop to smell all of the trees (only some of them...and it seems that she likes to sniff the trees as we're running up hill and against the wind so I have to tug at her.  I guess she's just trying to help her mom out and make her stronger! ;) ).

Nothing too exciting to report otherwise!  All I can say is the the plan is going well so far!  :)

Lisa: Day 1 of training

>> Monday, March 8, 2010

I'm happy to report that Day One was a success!  I didn't take a lunch break at work today so left an hour early to ensure that I would get the most of the beautiful day's weather. I suited up and got my dog Lola ready to go...

And then this happened (not sure you can see it but yes, it started HAILING):

The sky kept changing on me, going from sunny bright skies to dark ugly gray clouds and hail:

After being home for an hour, there hadn't been an interlude of dry weather for more than 5 minutes so I was hesitant to get out there with Lola if it decided to start pelting us with hail. I was pretty dead-set on just doing a yoga dvd and start the training tomorrow. But I ended up pumping myself up and I ventured out for the run! It was super chilly but the sun poked out for a bit and I successfully completed my first day of training (with no injuries due to hail either!).

Now I'm sitting down to a delicious bowl of homemade vegan chili (I took a few liberties with the recipe, but the basics can be found here) and I'm feelin' GOOD! :)

Kim...yay us!!

Kimberly: Day 1 of training!

Whew, I really started to have my doubts that I would train today! I just spent the last few days moving, unpacking, cleaning and running around like a mad woman. SO tired! But I did it - well, I attempted it! lol I started out strong but after 10 minutes I was doing more walking than jogging so to make up for my lack of "ooomph" I walked for an additional 10 minutes past my training time. Eh. I hope by Wednesday I'll be feeling more rested and ready to fully tackle and commit to the jogging portion of festivities!

Hey Lisa!! How did you do?!?!
